Ali’s Flip Chess: banqi (dark chess) for ages 6–12

Children play banqi, the hidden-piece game played with xiangqi pieces, against Ali the raccoon dog. All pieces start face down; each turn you flip one, move one, or capture, and you win by capturing all of the other side’s pieces. The three levels grow from 8 pieces (bigger captures smaller), to 16 (the soldier can capture the general), to the full 32-piece game (the cannon captures by jumping exactly one piece). Rank numbers on the pieces help on the first two levels and can be switched on or off on the third. Two players can also take turns on one device.

Pieces in danger glow orange and pieces you can capture glow yellow. Ali never peeks at face-down pieces, adjusts to your child’s level, and you can fix the level on the parent page. It lives in WonderPlay’s Brain Break corner: it is not a maths game and does not count towards daily missions or curriculum progress. Free, no ads, no sign-up, and no online play or chat.
